FCC orders consumer education plan by AT&T for its new calling card
Article Abstract:
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ruled that AT&T does not need to give other long-distance carriers its billing database and calling-card verification, that AT&T users need only dial zero and a telephone number when using most pay telephones and that the company must establish a consumer education program on the use of its calling card. The FCC made the decision so that pay telephone customers can make calls without being charged operator service company charges. AT&T will have to provide its customers with clear instructions as to how callers may use its network when calling from pay telephones that are dedicated to a competing network. The FCC said that the ruling is only temporary, until local telephone networks obtain the technology to let pay telephone callers choose whatever long distance service they wish.

Ameritech wants to enter long distance: Baby Bell also revamping into 12 unites, to open its network in exchange
Article Abstract:
Ameritech Corp will ask the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to endorse Ameritech's plan to lift the ban on regional Bell operating companies offering long-distance telephone service. Ameritech will also ask the FCC to lift the ban on local phone companies owning cable TV systems in their service regions. The Chicago-based Baby Bell will also ask the FCC to open up the local-phone market to competition. Lifting the long-distance ban would require the approval of the US Justice Dept and federal Judge Harold Greene, while lifting the ban on owning cable TV systems would require action by Congress or the courts. Ameritech also announces plans to reorganize into 12 units. Eleven would focus on specific customer groups, such as small businesses. The remaining unit would run Ameritech's local phone network.
