FTC says Merck deal cut competition
Article Abstract:
Merck and Company has been accused of reducing competition in the pharmaceuticals industry by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) following its acquisition of Medco Containment Services in 1993. Merck has agreed to FTC antitrust safeguards which would prevent the combined companies from reverting to previous unfair market practices. Medco, which is a managed-care drug sales firm, must refrain from offering information about competing products to Merck. Medco must also make available a wide array of products for inclusion on lists used by independent committees of pharmacies and doctors.
