Fast ferries lose their pace in Asia
Article Abstract:
The fast-ferry construction industry has been affected by the Asian financial crisis, and, as a result, orders are fewer, and some from Asia were frozen. Consequently, fast-ferry firms are searching for business in other areas. Some firms are anticipating an up to two-year hiatus in business from Asia. In Japan, demand is increasing for fast-ferries, but the competition is stiff and bidding prices are low.

Recovery within three years tipped for Asia
Article Abstract:
Former Bundesbank director Gerd Hausler predicts that the Asian economic crisis, which began in Oct. 1997, will be short-lived. The Bank of Japan appears stable, and Japanese investors will move toward high-yielding Australian financial markets. Hausler expects Australia's gross domestic product will fall by only 0.25 percentage points.

Inflation data quells hopes
Article Abstract:
Hopes of a recovery from the Asian economic crisis have been dashed by heightened inflation. Consumer price inflation totalled 32%, 9.5% and 8.9% in Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand, respectively, in Feb 1998 from Feb 1997. Inflation is particularly hard on the poor, as the prices of staples such as rice and flour have skyrocketed.
