Financial forecasting is an essential component of the management system of Rockwell International's Defense Electronics division. Its financial forecasting process addresses specific issues in the various markets where the division competes. Short-term forecasts are based on bottom-up forecasting techniques. For a long-term view, financial forecasting is used to measure their strategic planning. It aids management by telling them what resources are available to invest in and where potential vulnerabilities lie.

Financial forecasting at Atlantic Richfield Company
Article Abstract:
The financial forecasting methods employed by Atlantic Richfield Company, a major integrative oil firm in the US, are described. The company uses an economic model based on the DRI data base for planning the various segments of its business. To meet the supply and demand models appropriate for the oil and gas markets, a slight modification of the DRI data base is made. The process, which combines top-down and bottom-up planning, produces multiple scenarios, with various sets of assumptions.

Forecasting at Blue Cross of California: a corporate turnaround
Article Abstract:
The role that forecasting played in the successful turnaround effort of Blue Cross of California is described. The company initiated the corporate revamp in 1986 when it lost more than $60 million and had only $16 million in reserves. Three major strategies to improve the company's infrastructure and to help Blue Crossregain its competitive edge were implemented. These strategies served as the groundwork for developing the financial planning and forecasting systems now inplace.
