First armed U.N. troops arrive

The first 40 soldiers of a 500-man UN peacekeeping force arrived in Somalia to aid relief efforts. The US is expanding its airlift of food, but its relief efforts are being criticized. Officials are discovering that the famine is much worse than previously believed.

23 U.N. peace-keepers slain in attacks

Twenty-three Pakistani peace-keepers representing the UN were killed on Jun 5, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, after completing munitions-depot inspections. General Mohammed Farah Aidid was blamed for the attacks, and the UN planned a counterstrike.

American soldiers came to Somalia on Jan 28, 1995 to help the UN peacekeeping forces withdraw from there. The UN troops had failed to resolve conflicts beteween the two rival Somali factions and resolved to leave Somalia by Mar 31, 1995.
