Floating on a sea of uncertainty
Article Abstract:
There will be more floated companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange Ltd. (ASX) in 1999 than in any year since 1993 because of overly-optimistic investors who may end up not being rewarded. Investors have been encouraged by the share performances of large privatizations and have overlooked the post-listing performance of smaller firms that entered with minimal fund raising. Small company floats returned -6.5% in 1998, -12.2% in 1997, and -44% in 1996. In 1999, of the 21 new floats, half are listing below their issue prices.
