For sale: free software; backer of Linux say system is basis for revolutionizing computer business
Article Abstract:
Linux is drawing praise from some programmers and systems developers, who believe the free OS and open source also provides more security and flexibility than Microsoft's powerful Windows NT. Some Linux advocates believe it could potentially foster industry cooperation and challenge the Windows dominance by providing crash-proof software. Linus Torvalds of Finland collaborated with many others to develop this Unix OS system version in 1991, which allows programmers to study the source code before its binary language compilation. Other companies such as Red Hat are specializing in customer service and technical support for Linux. This trend may indicate a willingness by the software industry to shift away from the prevalent corporate structure and proprietary code. IDC says Linux is growing by more than 40% per year. Skeptics question how long the Linux idealism will last and whether Linux can make inroads into Windows' 300 million users.

Apple to preview new operations system; computer maker counting on Rhapsody to cure software ills
Article Abstract:
Apple is developing a new operating system, code named Rhapsody, which it hopes will restore its reputation for easy to use software. Apple will demonstrate Rhapsody at its Worldwide Developers Conference on May 13, 1997. The company has introduced several powerful new Macintosh computers this year. The company needs software developers to create applications for its computers, otherwise Rhapsody will not succeed. Rhapsody's core component is Yellow Box, which will run on PCs based on Intel's microprocessors as well as Macintosh computers. This is the first time Apple had created cross-platform software. This is critical because software developers have become increasingly wary of building software applications solely for Macintoshes.

Article Abstract:
Even though Linux is supposed to be a new freedom, a new operating system that everyone can enjoy, many fans are worried about the operating systems "public performance." They are worried that things might get a little bit chaotic and it will lead to systems not being able to understand each other.
