Forced Haiti repatriation to continue

Pres Clinton reported on Jan 14, 1993, that Haitians entering the US illegally would continue to be forcibly repatriated. The move appeared to be a change in Clinton's earlier position on Haitian boat people. Clinton had called the Bush Administration policy of repatriation 'illegal' and 'immoral'.

U.S. begins repatriations

The forcible repatriation of Haitian refugees picked up at sea while trying to escape from their homeland began Feb 1, 1992. The repatriation process started after the Supreme Court ruled Jan 31, 1992, to remove a Dec 1991 District Court injunction barring the action.

Haitian refugees living at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, US naval base were denied any chance to receive political asylum and were being forced to return to their native Haiti. The refugees rejected voluntary repatriation efforts, and the US action was criticized.
