Forecasting system parent group formation: an empirical application of cluster analysis
Article Abstract:
The ability of forecasting systems based on families of items to deliver superior performance compared to more conventional systems was examined. This was achieved by examining the structural parameters of the formal hierarchical system and by comparing the performance of this model to that of an informal, hierarchical system and a traditional method. Results revealed that formal hierarchical approaches do not yield superior performance and that simple, traditional systems are far better.

Hybrid structures and improving forecasting and scheduling in project management
Article Abstract:
Classical scientific dichotomies in the fields of project management, operations management and other areas of managerial decision-making can be synthesized to form hybrids which combine the strengths and eliminate the shortfalls of seemingly contradictory concepts. Among the concepts and techniques which can be integrated, or at least related, are subjective-objective forecasts, short-term-long-term forecasting methods and the mean and median.

Minimum tardiness scheduling in flow shops: construction and evaluation of alternative solution approaches
Article Abstract:
Heuristic solution methods were used to develop local optimality conditions for reducing tardiness in 2-machine flow shops. The study demonstrates that although scheduling rules can be used to solve such problems, the inherent structure of a flow shop can be employed to frame superior, decomposition-based solutions. The approaches developed were found to be effective under most problem scenarios.
