Forget the PC glitz; spend your next dime adding more memory
Article Abstract:
The single most effective addition to a computer's features is the addition of more RAM, and with Windows 95 and Macintosh's Copland operating systems about to be introduced, extra RAM is a requirement for good performance. RAM is stored on separate memory chips that are responsible for temporarily storing program data from which the computer's microprocessor runs the overall operation. Most machines have 4MB, 8MB or 16MB of RAM installed. Additional RAM can be purchased for about $50 per MB, with 4MB priced at just under $200. Extra RAM is easy to install by fitting it into the computer's SIMM expansion slots, but compatibility problems can occur because different vendors have different setups. Extra RAM is essential to properly run new applications designed for the upcoming Windows 95. Microsoft claims that Windows 95 will run with 4MB of RAM, but this will produce excruciatingly slow performance.

Compaq and H-P now offer scanners built right into PCs
Article Abstract:
Compaq and HP are the first significant computer manufacturers to offer Pentium-based systems with integral optical scanning devices, and each device works well as an integrated component of a full system. Compaq's $2,199 Presario 7232 includes a 1.6GB hard drive, a four-speed CD-ROM drive, a 28.8-Kbps modem, 8MB of RAM and a 120MHz Pentium processor. Inserting a piece of paper into the 7232's Scanner Keyboard automatically initiates a brief, easy scanning process, and a software module then guides users through various options and features for treating the scanned image. HP's $2,649 Pavilion 7130P includes a 133MHz Pentium, 16MB of RAM, a six-speed CD-ROM drive, 28.8-Kbps modem, a 1.6GB hard drive and a color scanner that accepts paper and images as large as 5" x 7". However, the Presario scanner lacks color capability, and the HP model does not handle larger pictures.
