Gateway posts loss on 15% sales decline

Personal computer company Gateway Inc. has announced a 15% sales drop for its first quarter, with a $502.9 million loss and a decline of $1.56 a share, 56 cents more than analysts predicted. Gateway, suffering from a fierce competitive market is leaving OfficeMax and other retail stores and will concentrate on selling computers via the phone, Internet and Gateway Country outlets. The company's losses were reflected in a $43 million charge from its involvement in Vitech America, as well as a consumer loan charge of $100 million and $389 million for restructuring and layoffs.
