Germans join America Online in Europe deal
Article Abstract:
Deutsche Telekom, Bertelsmann and Axel Springer join America Online (AOL) in an on-line venture that seeks to prevent Microsoft from dominating the European market. The combination of the Axel Springer and Bertelsmann publishing houses and the German telecommunications power Deutsche Telekom give AOL Germany the strongest financial backing of any on-line service. Springer will provide most of the service's content, but analysts say that Deutsche Telekom could prove to be the most significant participant because it has the ability to provide inexpensive telecommunications services throughout Germany. Deutsche Telekom already runs an on-line service for business users that has 900,000 subscribers in Germany. The backers see AOL Germany as a means to stave off the Microsoft Network, which has some 75,000 European subscribers. AOL Germany will offer entertainment and consumer services when it debuts in Germany in Dec 1995 and enters Britain and France in 1996.

On-line giant may link to CBS News; America Online deal would replace ABC
Article Abstract:
On the record no one will comment on the rumor that AOL will end its contract with ABC as its news source for its online service and replace ABC with CBS news. But off the record executives familiar with the talks say they are close to such an announcement. CBS is seen as the one network news source in the most need of such a boost; 15 million AOL customers would be good for the CBS online news presence.
