British and Irish officials announced that peace talks will resume Jun 10, 1996, and that Sinn Fein will not be allowed to participate unless it initiated another cease fire. Sinn Fein ended its last cease fire in Feb 1996 when talks were stalled. The IRA does not need to disarm immediately.

Major wins confidence vote on Maastricht Treaty

British Prime Minister John Major announced on Nov 5, 1992, that final ratification of the Treaty on European Union would probably not take place in the UK until May 1993. The announcement was unexpected because the day before, the House of Commons had approved the pact.
