'Green' value chain practices in the furniture industry
Article Abstract:
Results of a study aimed at evaluating the taxonomy of environmentally-friendly best practices within the operations management value chain in the furniture industry indicated the value of implementing environmental management strategies. The strategies should be integrated into all stages of the value chain, including the processes of product design, procurement, manufacturing and assembly. The five companies studied showed potential for environmental performance improvement and also 'pockets' of environmentally-friendly practice in various areas of their value chain functions.

The scientific theory-building process: a primer using the case of TQM
Article Abstract:
Total Quality Management is an interesting basis for the examination of the validity of theory-building process as a model for evaluation and subsequent development of the theory as a working process. Total Quality Management begins with theory-building which is validated upon its application. The success of a TQM program may be due to several theories, the generation of which may not be sequential, but whose sequence is ultimately determined by trial and error, and institutionalized by a monitoring and recording process which takes note of valid theories.

May you live in interesting times ... the emergence of theory-driven empirical research
Article Abstract:
The field of research in operations management is opening itself up to theory-driven empirical research so as to accumulate a body of knowledge that will open up a phenomenon not only in terms of its components but also in terms of the interrelationship of components and drivers of such relationship. The current realities of economics and its subsequent effects on operations necessitates a new methodology for understanding the basic mechanism that drive such changes.
