Article Abstract:
Stocks in the grocery store industry appreciated by 28.1% in 1998, well above market averages, being led mainly by the largest operators in the industry. The grocery store sector is expected to increase profits in 1999 with continued consolidation and higher margins from private-label brands and greater product assortment, but there are challenges from online shopping and alternative formats in the future. These stocks are well ranked for 1999 and for the next three-to-five years, as well.
