Guess who decides new area codes--Lockheed Martin does; it grants a 'vanity' number to Kennedy Space Center; it's 321, as in blast off
Article Abstract:
AT&T created the area code numbering plan a long time ago, for long-distance operators to use. Then consumers needed to use them as operators were phased out. When Ma Bell broke up in 1984, the numbering task went to Bellcore, owned by the Baby Bells. When the job was opened up to bids, a Lockheed Martin Corp. unit won the task. The unit's director says it was extremely rare that Central Florida was able to win their request for 3-2-1 (blast off) where the Kennedy Space Center is located.
