HDTV bidders agree to merge their systems
Article Abstract:
A tentative agreement has been reached for combining four competing systems in order to create a US standard for high-definition television (HDTV). Two such systems have been developed by General Instruments Corp and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Another has been developed by Zenith Electronics Inc and AT&T, and yet another by a group that includes the David Sarnoff Research Center, US units of Thomson SA and Philips Electronics NV, General Electric Co's NBC unit and Compression Labs Inc. The federal government advocates a 'grand alliance,' hoping to encourage a quicker transition to HDTV. A final agreement is near, but Thomson must rework its licensing arrangements with GE. If an agreement is not reached, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will step in to choose a winner, probably in 1994.

FCC panel urges new set of HDTV tests
Article Abstract:
A special panel advises the Federal Communications Commission's Advisory Committee on Advanced Television to hold a new round of testing before selecting a standard for high-definition television (HDTV). The advisory committee will meet and advise the full FCC of its own recommendation, but that meeting will likely be pushed back to Jul 1993 in order to run the additional tests. Four systems are competing to be named as the standard. The special panel decided that none of the systems stood out; all had shortcomings. The competitors are happy to go into another round of testing, which is slated to start Mar 15 at the industry-supported Advanced Television Test Center. A final FCC decision now will not happen until 1994. However, the four competitors have begun talking about consolidating their systems.
