HUD scandal: ex-Interior Secretary Watt pleads guilty

Watt pled guilty on Jan 2, 1996, to one count of lying to a federal grand jury that was investigating bribery and influence peddling at HUD related to low-income housing contracts. Independent counsel Larry D Thomspon agreed to drop 18 other felony counts against Watt in return for the plea bargain.

Adams resigns, probe's end seen near
Article Abstract:
Adams resigned as independent counsel in the investigation into corruption at HUD. Larry D. Thompson will replace Adams during the last part of the investigation, which will include the trial of former Interior Sec James G. Watt on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Watt, former Interior secretary from 1981-83, was indicted on Feb 22, 1995, on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. The charges stem from Watt's lobbying activities on the behalf of developers from 1984-86, to win contracts from the Housing and Urban Development Dept.
