Haiti: Aristide's party dominates elections
Article Abstract:
The Aristide-supported Lavalas Movement, a three-party coalition, won 17 of the 18 senate seats and 67 of the total 83 in the lower house in the Sept runoffs. The opposition wants the elections voided because of mismanagement in the June elections. Aristide pledged to step down in Feb 1996.

Haiti compromise sets Aristide return
Article Abstract:
Former Haitian Pres Aristide and Lieutenant General Raoul Cedras, who led a coup d'etat against Aristide in 1991, signed an agreement to reinstate Aristide by Oct 30, 1993. The agreement also would provide amnesty for military leaders who participated in the coup.

United Nations envoy Dante Caputo mediated talks in Jun 1993 between Haiti's exiled President Aristide and the military leader responsible for his ouster, Raoul Cedras. The Haitian leaders disagreed over the the military's role in a Aristide-led government.
