Handheld games, encyclopedias to draw crowds at Consumer Electronics Show

Various handheld products will be shown at the Consumer Electronics Show, to be held in Las Vegas, NV, starting on Jan 10, 1991. Interest in handheld entertainment is increased by the success of Nintendo Co's Game Boy video game ($90), which sold 3.5 million units in 1990. Sega Enterprises Ltd, Nintendo's main rival, introduces Game Gear which offers a crisp color display at a higher price ($160). Two new electronic reference books will also be introduced. Selectronics offers the Random House Encyclopedia in a $350 package that weighs 12 ounces, and Franklin Electronic Publishers Inc offers the Columbia Encyclopedia in a similar format. Other products include: educational add-ons, a navigation system for drivers, a new high-quality audio-tape system, cellular phones, a new way to transmit video programs over cables, and a game-unit attachment that teaches a user how to play a musical instrument.

Microsoft profit soared 85% in quarter; software maker's earnings easily beat estimates; operating margin rose

Microsoft's 3rd qtr 1997 profits rose 85%, revenue jumped 45% and operating margins increased to 49%, as compared to 3rd qtr 1996 results. The tremendous growth far exceeded analysts' expectations, and pushed Microsoft stock prices to $102.50 per share. The quarter was one of the strongest ever for Microsoft, and comes at a time when many PC industry companies are struggling. The results reflect strong sales of Windows NT, BackOffice applications and Office 97, which has sold 8 million copies since it began shipping in Jan 1997. Microsoft's corporate and NT sales provide nearly 20% of Microsoft's total revenue and are growing 100% annually. Microsoft also announced that its browser market share grew to 30%, as compared to 12% in 3rd qtr 1996, reflecting significant gains against its rival Netscape. Microsoft also boasts cash reserves totalling $9 billion.

Thomson Multimedia, Microsoft agree to TV pact

Thomson Multimedia and Microsoft have reached an agreement in which the Thomson will feature Microsoft's Windows CE OSes in TV brands including RCA in the US and Saba in Europe. This mass-market delivery of Internet TV highlights a partial privatization of the French state-owned TV manufacturing giant to four industrial partners. Terms call for Japan's NEC, France's Alcatel Alsthom, Microsoft and Hughes Electronics's DirecTV subsidiary to purchase 7.5% stakes apiece from the French government for an undisclosed amount. Microsoft believes the arrangement will strengthen its Web TV vision of combining personal computing, the Internet and television. Microsoft also hopes to raise its US software and services presence through Thomson's RCA Direct TV satellite television brand.
