Health funds on the way to recovery
Article Abstract:
Australia's private health funds are expected to return to profitability in 1998-99, but the industry has more work to do to keep the funds profitable. The health funds industry lost $10.7 million in 1997-98 and $130 million in 1996-97. Health fund membership reached a high in December 1998 with 5.6 million people covered by health benefits organizations--30.1% of the population. The industry's main focus is finding ways to close gap payments. National Mutual introduced contractual no-gap services in 1997.
