Here's help in finding the essential facts about fax machines
Article Abstract:
Facsimile machines can be thought of as long-distance photocopiers. Fax machines are like copiers in the way they scan documents, with the difference, of course, that a fax machine transmits its scanned document to a remote location via phone lines. Fax machines, which are nowadays often loaded with various features, can be confusing to purchase. The basic rule is this: buy only the machine and the features that are needed. Do not buy what is not necessary. Shopping for a fax machine is made simpler if a few buzzwords and features are understood. For example, 'Group 3' compatibility simply refers to adherence to the commonly accepted international standard. Some fax machines are said to double as copiers, but they are usually not very useful for this purpose. Features are of three main kinds: those that involve feeding documents into machines; those that involve telephone functions; and those that involve receiving faxes sent from elsewhere. Various options are briefly described and discussed.

This package lets you gaze out the window - in a branch office
Article Abstract:
Intel's ProShare videoconferencing software performs well overall, but its most basic features, those that require a minimum of technical hassle and financial investment, really shine. The video-enabled version is even more promising, but it may not be for all users. It has some technical restrictions and requires some change in office habits. The set up can be difficult and an ISDN line is required. ProShare features adequate video capabilities, but a powerful computer is needed to run it, such as a Pentium-based PC with 16MB of RAM. ProShare functions as a type of on-screen notebook with tabbed pages. Users bring up documents from other applications onto these pages and both parties can view and write in comments on these documents. Tools, such as an electronic highlighter, are used to make visual marks while discussing the document over the phone.

Aging Mac interface could learn tricks from Windows
Article Abstract:
The graphical user interface for the Apple Macintosh, though still slightly superior to Microsoft Windows, is looking long in the tooth these days. The Mac is still easier to set up and run than any Windows computer, but the Mac's advantage over Windows could disappear entirely if Microsoft succeeds in its plans to redo Windows by 1994. Nice features on Windows that should be implemented on the Mac include menus that remain on display after the mouse button has been released, the ability to call up a menu by using the keyboard, less screen clutter, more full-bodied suites of 'applets,' or cut-down applications; more customization options, better online help, quicker access to the print function, faster switching among multiple applications and greater ability to customize the mouse.
