Hewlett-Packard profit fell 38% in its 4th period
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard's earnings are down 38 percent for 4th qtr FY 1991 because of restructuring and layoff charges. After the pretax charges of about $150 million, or 40 cents per share, are deducted, HP's earnings are up 12 percent. Despite this respectable showing, analysts are concerned over the firm's international sales, which are flat for the first time in six years. HP's US sales are up 14 percent. US orders now make up 44 percent of HP's orders, and this has helped increase revenue from $3.58 billion to $3.83 billion. Peripheral and network sales rose 20 percent in 1991 compared the same period in FY 1990. Revenue for FY 1991 increased 10 percent, from $13.23 billion in 1990, to $14.49 billion. Net income increased 2.1 percent from $739 million, or $3.06 per share in FY 1990, to $755 million, or $3.02 a share.

Hewlett's profit climbed by 18 percent in its first quarter; most forecasts exceeded as cost-cutting moves begin to show results
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard announces a rise in net income of 18 percent for its 1st qtr ending Jan 31, 1990. Net income for the quarter is reported at $205 million, up from $173 million in the same period in 1989. Revenue is up from $3.1 billion to $3.41 billion, a rise of 10 percent. The results mark an end to several consecutive quarters of sliding profits, as the company attempts to adjust in a shift in demand towards microcomputers and workstations and away from its mainstay minicomputer and test-and-measurement products. Much of the growth in orders for HP's products comes from the overseas market, which is larger by 20 percent, to $2.2 billion. The figures for domestic orders show growth only three percent to $1.5 billion. Analysts attribute the overall improvement to HP's recent cost reduction efforts.
