High-tech firms in Japan post drop in first-half profit
Article Abstract:
Six top Japanese electronics companies reported lowered earnings for the first half of the fiscal year and lowered forecasts for the full year, despite their predictions in May, 1992, for an improved fiscal year. The poor showing was due to continued lack of world-wide demand and lower profit margins - trends that have been plaguing the industry since 1990. Also, the yen has been stronger, which has raised prices of Japanese goods for foreign customers. Fujitsu Ltd reported pretax earnings at 4.4 billion yen, or $36 million, 86.5 percent lower than the first-half earnings of last year. Matsushita Electric Industrial Ltd announced 51 percent lower pretax earnings and 6.9 percent lower sales for the parent company. Toshiba Corp announced 39 percent lower first-half pretax profit but forecasts a 2 percent rise in sales.
