Home appliance industry
Article Abstract:
Prices in the US home appliance industry have been kept down by the large amount of cheaper goods imported from Asia in spite of the resiliant American economy. Some of the low- and mid-line appliance producers are shifting their product mixes as those sectors of the industry are the most competitive, and volatile economic conditions overseas are also affecting the industry. Few are these stocks are ranked favorably for 1999 in spite of improved US economic outlook.

Article Abstract:
Few home appliance makers are attractive choices for short-term investors. Of the home appliance firms tracked by Value Line, only Black & Decker and Maytag have favorable timliness rankings. Investors with more of a long-term approach should consider firms such as Whirlpool that have promising global operations. Fedders and Toro have significant turnaround potential and therefore may be suitable for patient, risk-tolerant investors.

Article Abstract:
Sales in the home appliance industry are doing quite well due to sound economic conditions and consumer confidence in the economy. Strong price increases are unlikely, due to the surplus of imported products. However, international economic problems have not restrained domestic growth. In the short term, home appliance industry stocks present few attractive choices to investors.
