How Do You Spell Prudent?
Article Abstract:
Gilbert W. Chilton served as the chairman of the California State Teachers Retirement Fund (STRS). During that time he is believed to be guilty of accepting bribes and kickbacks from companies STRS made loans to. When Chilton joined STRS in 1982, he was immediately hailed as the only member of the board with any financial background because of his experience in banking. Since the fund was near bankruptcy at the time, his recommendations were quickly adopted as chairman of the finance committee he engineered high risk loans to some small oil companies. He also engineered residential loans. Investigations have revealed that during this time Chilton spent large sums of money. This money is believed to be from kickbacks. Chilton is now missing and has been placed on the FBI's 'Wanted' list.
