How Monsanto justified automation
Article Abstract:
Automation has resulted in the doubling of productivity for the Pensacola, FL, plant of Monsanto's Fibers and Intermediates Division. The introduction of computer-integrated manufacturing, total quality management and self-directed work teams also helped the plant lessen waste, decrease inventories, improve quality and reduce indirect labor. Monsanto's accountants were instrumental in ensuring the success of its Pensacola plant. They were able to accurately assess the impact of automation on productivity which justified the company's implementation of automation processes. Monsanto's productivity improvement program involved the creation of a long-term plan, analysis of costs involved in all production processes, assessment of improvements and effects on operations, and consideration of total process and quality improvement.

Learning from a CIM experience
Article Abstract:
Tandem Computers, Inc's Micro Products Division had to adapt its accounting system after implementing a computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) system. The installation of a CIM system necessitated the implementation of an automated accounting information system. The new system automated such accounting functions as accounts payable and receivable, corporate financial reporting, and management reporting. In order to increase the accuracy of the accounting function in the CIM environment, goals and activity measures were established for major product lines.
