How a cyber sleuth, using a 'data tap,' busted a hacker ring
Article Abstract:
Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Michael Morris uncovered a ring of computer hackers and helped make case against one of them named Calvin Cantrell. Using data-intercept equipment, Mr. Morris was able to uncover the most extensive crimes against the nation's telecommunications infrastructure. Mr. Cantrell was part of a group called 'The Phonemasters.' By manipulating computers, the group was able to gain access to a number of telephone networks of companies including AT&T Corp., GTE Corp., British Telecommunications Inc., Sprint Corp., Southwestern Bell and the former MCI Communications Corp. The group also hacked credit-reporting databases of Equifax Inc. and TRW Inc. Looking to make a profit from his crimes, Mr. Cantrell offered to sell state motor-vehicle records, personal credit reports and even records from the FBI's Crime Information Center.
