How frank are the funds?
Article Abstract:
Many fund managers, under regulatory scrutiny to improve reporting to investors, are promoting the strengths of their products while ignoring the weaknesses, and this has confused the financial planning of investors. Investors focus on performance and fees. Fund marketers want to make performance appear better and fees lower. Fund managers often quote point-to-point returns; one solution is to examine rolling average returns. Reporting of performance through benchmarks or without related issues can mislead investors. Also, the relationship between fees and performance is not being clearly reported.
