How the Bells can feel like helpless, pitiful giants
Article Abstract:
Local telephone service provider Bell Atlantic, a "baby Bell" company is smarting over its failure to acquire Airtouch Communications Inc. Management believes that governmental regulations and shareholders are preventing them from entering into the lucrative long-distance and cellular phone service industries. Governmental regulators have barred local phone service providers from merging with larger telecommunications services providers because the government does not believe that local phone service has been adequately opened up to competitors. Additionally, shareholders of companies like Bell Atlantic are more conservative and do not want to make the cash investment necessary to acquire an established long-distance and cellular provider.

Article Abstract:
Northern Telecom has progressed from losing $878 million in FY 1993 to gaining earnings of $623 million on $12.8 billion in revenue in FY 1996. Wall Street analysts predict that the company will earn approximately $815 million in 1997. Nortel CEO Jean C. Monty is resigning and passing the title to John A. Roth. The company's single largest market is the US, which accounts for 40% of its business. Lucent Technologies is Nortel's largest competitor with a revenue of $23.8 billion in 1996 compared to Nortel's $12.8 billion.
