Apple Computer slates accord to use technology devised by America Online
Article Abstract:
Apple forms an alliance with America Online Inc, a supplier of online information services. Apple's planned use of America Online's software appears to lay the groundwork for Apple's forthcoming array of portable electronic devices, such as the Newton. Subscribers to services such as America Online have phone-line access to weather forecasts, databases, hotel reservation systems and shopping networks. Apple will pay America Online at least $15 million over five years as well as fully financing the service's efforts to modify its software for use by Apple. Apple also receives warrants to pay $25 apiece for a half-million shares of America Online.

Making 'Rent-a-PC' a household name
Article Abstract:
In the past, computer rental firms have been small, independently owned stores, but recently the industry has gained the attention of some important vendors and retail outlets. Some analysts estimate the rental market to be worth $500 million-a-year, and it is growing at 35 percent annually. Recently IBM and DEC have both announced plans to authorize rental dealers to carry their products. With the clout of these firms behind rental, the industry's biggest problem, low visibility, could be solved. Analysts say customers turn to rentals for peak period help, to test out new products, and to have access to computing power when on business trips.
