IBM, Thinking Machines plan joint projects
Article Abstract:
IBM and Thinking Machines Corp sign a development agreement that will allow IBM access to massive parallelism technology and strengthen its foothold on the supercomputer market. Thinking Machines, on the other hand, will be able to reach IBM's mainframe customer base. The agreement further allows IBM to pursue a new approach to mainframe development: instead of developing faster machines that can perform various tasks, the company wants to concentrate on developing devices that can be attached to its mainframes and can be tailored for a specific task. Details of the agreement have not been made public but officials of both companies say the initial task would be to ensure that Thinking Machines' supercomputers be compatible with IBM's. Currently, Thinking Machines' computers work with DEC VAXes and Sun Microsystems' workstations.

IBM, Citicorp's Quotron reach accord covering service and customer support
Article Abstract:
IBM and Citicorp's Quotron Systems Inc agree that IBM will handle installation, service and support for Quotron. The agreement essentially eliminates Quotron's computer development and maintenance businesses. Quotron will not develop its own computers, but will use IBM workstations and microcomputers instead. Quotron supplies financial information, including stock quotes, via telecommunications arrangements. Citicorp has so far invested more than $1 billion in Quotron, but Quotron has not yet returned any profits. Analysts say IBM's access to Quotron's clients should be a boon for the computer giant.
