IBM and Sears data networks seen merging
Article Abstract:
Sears Roebuck & Co and IBM plan to merge their voice-and-data networking businesses to form Advantis, a new service company. The new company will be majority-owned by IBM and will be managed by IBM as an outsourcing-type of project. Advantis will offer a combined Sears-IBM network for use by customers and third parties. Both IBM and Sears already offer similar services on an independent basis. IBM is aggressively marketing these types of data networks to cash in on recent trends. Industry analysts estimate that network-oriented businesses could generate up to $7 billion in revenue by 1994. IBM is also introducing its first product using the redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID) disk drive technology.

IBM bets chips on looser ties to Intel, at times competing with close partner
Article Abstract:
IBM is negotiating contracts with several semiconductor companies, after years of relying on Intel for its microprocessors. Throughout the 1980s, IBM relied on Microsoft for software and Intel for some of its hardware. As the computer industry experienced the recession, IBM realized it needed to manufacture its own parts and investigate new vendors. IBM is now developing its own microprocessors and has teamed up with Cyrix, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Motorola Inc for various projects. IBM still manufactures products that use Intel chips, but the company also manufactures its own chips using the Intel 80486 design. Intel has licensed the design of the chip to IBM under a special arrangement.
