I.B.M. introducing Merlin, its latest OS/2 software; business system is no match for Microsoft
Article Abstract:
IBM debuts OS/2 Warp 4.0, developed under the code-name Merlin, but the company seems to admit that the operating system will not be competitive in the consumer market dominated by Microsoft Windows. An estimated 11 million users employ the operating system, in contrast to 140 million Windows users. But IBM's 3,000 largest OS/2 customers account for 25% to 30% of the company's $72 billion in annual revenue. Customers frequently write proprietary programs for OS/2, since few off-the-shelf products work with the operating system, and IBM seeks to protect its customers' investment. OS/4 Warp 4.0 sports a new interface and is easier to use than previous versions. Users may issue voice commands as well using the mouse and keyboard, and the operating system offers integrated Java support. While many expect OS/2 to dwindle away, some analysts contend it could become a lucrative niche product for IBM.

Microsoft and Pointcast in broadcast alliance
Article Abstract:
Microsoft and Pointcast have announced an agreement whereby Pointcast will use Microsoft technology and distribute information from MSNBC news service and Microsoft will feature the Pointcast Network in its Internet-integrated version of Windows 95. Microsoft's 1997 version of Windows 95 will incorporate Microsoft's Web browser, Internet Explorer, and will allow users to view various Internet channels, including Pointcast Network, from the desktop. The technology behind this feature, known as 'push' technology, is the basis of Pointcast's successful service for providing personalized information deliveries over the Internet. Before the agreement, the two companies were positioned as rival providers for this service. The alliance may jeopardize Netscape's dominance in the Web browser market.
