IBM unveils long-awaited mainframes
Article Abstract:
IBM's long awaited introduction of its first new generation of mainframe computers in several years came off pretty much as expected. The new System 390 family will not be available for another year, so IBM announced a transition line of mainframes that are basically repackaged 3090 computers with some extra niceties such as fiber-optic channels. The transition machines will be priced at a discount of from 16 percent to 20 percent off the price of existing 3090 computers. The new high-end System 390 will be from 1.7 to 1.9 time faster than than IBM's current top-of-the-line mainframe. The new top speed is equivalent to 210 MIPS, and should give IBM bragging rights to the fastest mainframe. IBM also introduces new System 390 minicomputers with price/performance ratios as much as 50 percent better than the machines they will replace.

IBM introduces models using new Intel chip
Article Abstract:
IBM announces a new $9,995 PS/2 95 microcomputer based on the Intel 80486SX microprocessor. The 486SX is a less-powerful and cheaper version of the Intel 80486 microprocessor. Industry observers were expecting IBM to announce the new PS/2 95 but not as soon as it did; the number-one computer maker is usually two months behind its competitors in announcing products based on new technology. The computer maker also cuts prices by between three- and 38 percent on older versions of the PS/2 microcomputer in an effort to clear out its product line. IBM expects its newly discounted microcomputers and its new model of the PS/ 2 95 to sell at five times the rate in the 2nd qtr of 1991 compared to the 1st qtr of 1991.
