ISO 14001: against the tide of modern management?
Article Abstract:
The International Organization for Standardization sought to harmonize environmental management systems with the introduction of the ISO 14000 in 1996. In particular, ISO 14001 is aimed at providing better environmental management practices, improving corporate image, removing trade barriers, and facilitating compliance with regulations. ISO 14001 is based on the principles of management commitment and environmental policy, planning, implementation and operational control, measurements and corrective action, and review and periodic enhancement of the environmental management system. However, the standard overlooks some modern management trends that are essential to corporate success. It does not address the need for employee participation and empowerment, and employee intelligence and creativity. This could result in the rote implementation of the management systems, thereby producing bureaucracy and devalued practices.

A Way to Pay That's Not Just Academic
Article Abstract:
With room, board and tuition at many private colleges approaching the $10,000 mark, more and more students are starting to look at co-op education programs more seriously. In these programs, students alternate one semester of education with one semester of work. These programs are different than traditional work-study programs, and the students in the program often get jobs with the companies where they do their training. These programs are not for everybody and seem to attract students in such fields as accounting and engineering. The students participating in these programs get to see what their chosen field is really like, in addition to helping pay their own way. It also boosts their confidence and gives the companies who participate in the program a chance to have early access to future potential employees.

A group of pictures is presented in which the photographers captured intense private moments. Often the subject looked right at the camera.
