Many international business enterprises have entered into strategic alliances instead of merging or engaging in all-out competition. Encouraged by deregulation, the trend toward cooperation is illustrated by alliances in the automobile industry and information technology. Mergers and acquisitions often fail to deliver promised economies of scale, partly because of different industrial sectors of the merging companies.
