Improvement in mainframe market expected to be slow
Article Abstract:
Computer industry analysts and market researchers expect sales of mainframe computers to increase in the fall of 1991, but more slowly than predicted earlier. Sales of minicomputers are also expected to grow somewhat. New generations of mainframes from IBM and those who make IBM-compatible systems fuel this pick up in sales. Observers do not expect a greater surge in sales until 1992. Sales of peripherals are actually slowing down, victims of the economic recession that is slowing the growth of mainframe computer purchases. Budget constraints are only part of the reason, however, Other factors are potential buyers' wait-and-see attitude toward the new systems, heavier use of more powerful microcomputers and workstations, the tendency to lease rather than buy new machines and increased outsourcing of data processing.

IBM moves to trim layer of management
Article Abstract:
IBM removes a layer in its management structure so that product development, which has been considered to be slow and inefficient, will be speeded and improved. All but one of IBM's product development groups will now report directly to the five-man committee that manages IBM. Previously, product development groups had reported to the general manager of IBM's US operations, who reported, in turn, to the company's management committee. IBM's microcomputer, workstation, and AS/400 minicomputer groups will report to Jack Kuehler, who is IBM's president and is on the management committee. IBM's mainframe, operating-system software, semiconductor and networking groups will report to Terry Lautenbach, who is a senior VP and general manager of IBM's US business, and who is now a member of the management committee.
