In time for elections, software to help you make up your mind
Article Abstract:
Many frivolous computer applications fail to increase utility over established methods of communication, but Avantos Performance Systems' DecideRight decision support software provides users with a variety of evaluation models that ease entire processes. DecideRight operates equally well with business and personal applications, providing a detailed list of the benefits and losses associated with a certain decision based on preset criteria. Graphical tables created by DecideRight aid a user in clarifying the values attributed to the elements of a decision, and the entirety of all mathematical calculations are transparent to the user. The processes are easily definable, offering numerous graphical and linguistic representations of analysis and providing an array of hypothetical scenarios that help determine the best solution with assurance.

Software for handling finances is improved, gets good competitor
Article Abstract:
Intuit's Quicken and Computer Associates' Kiplinger's CA-Simply Money offer similar features, but Quicken remains the best program for managing finances. Simply Money provides competent basic finance functions and sells for only $6.95, but the program has some troubled aspects. Quicken, which sells for $30 to $40, features the popular check and checkbook register screens, and the latest version is capable of making deposit, payment and transfer entries onto a calendar. This addition enables users to plan well in advance and eliminates extra typing. Simply Money features a new user interface complete with drag and drop icons, and the financial advice that appears can prove useful to most users. Simply Money offers no direct link to an electronic service for paying bills, and converting to Simply Money from Quicken is difficult.

If health-care forms make you sweat, help is on the way
Article Abstract:
Two companies, Time Solutions and TE Corp, are making a new type of software package that allows home computer users to manage their medical claims. Time Solutions' $70 DOS-based MedSure is a much better product than TE's macClaimChek and ClaimChek for Windows, two $45 packages that are essentially databases for keeping track of claims. All three packages keep detailed records of doctor visits, hospital visits and claims and detailed profiles of health policies and health-care providers. Profiles are combined to create an entry for each claim. MedSure is better designed and more powerful, with lots of background material on health insurance, the capability to analyze health-insurance policies in detail, and other nice features.
