Indigenous art survives scandals
Article Abstract:
Australia's $200 million-a-year Aboriginal art industry is being tainted by fraud, and the government and the National Indigenous Art Advocacy Association (NIAAA) want to establish an authentication system to protect consumers and artists. NIAAA envisions a certification trademark or label of authenticity to be attached to Aboriginal art. It will be the artist's responsibility to apply for a label. The label scheme is awaiting approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
