Article Abstract:
Progressive Networks and Jfax Communications debut Internet messaging services that increase the Internet's ability to compete with radio and television broadcasting. Jfax, a recent technology start-up, will introduce an online service allowing Internet users to receive voice-mail and fax messages at an e-mail address anywhere in the world. Progressive Network's Timecast technology allows PC users to augment news broadcasts with Internet-based audio information from traditional news sources. The new technologies combine traditional news content with the ability to program how the information is delivered. Also, the technologies represent the fact that small or entrepreneurial companies can offer the same, or superior, services as well-established corporations. Jfax's $12.50-per-month electronic messaging service currently operates in New York, London and Atlanta.

New Nintendo game faces Internet challenges
Article Abstract:
Nintendo of America announces the $250 N64 game player, but the product may have arrived too late, since much of the computer game market is moving toward games played by groups of players over the Internet. The multiplayer games are hosted by companies that set up high-performance servers that guarantee sufficient speed and performance for games. Users who are physically thousands of miles apart can compete against each other, connecting to the online games via modem. Many analysts believe that the social nature of multiplayer games will make them more popular than stand-alone machines such as the N64. Some analysts even contend that multiplayer gaming will be the application that makes the Internet into a popular entertainment medium that can compete against TV and movies. Nintendo ships the N64 to Japan in Jun 1996 and will release it in the US on Sept 30.
