Investors have driven up the prices of securities in the property and casualty insurance business, but the industry's profit margins may decline in late 1997 and early 1998. Losses have grown more slowly than costs, but rates are expected to shrink as a result of regulation. Automobile insurance will probably show good results, but investors should think carefully before purchasing stocks of the top-rated casualty and property insurance companies.
