Intel delays the delivery of key chip
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp.'s new high-end chip code-named Merced will miss its target availability date by six months, coming out in mid-2000 rather than late-l999. The chip will be targeted at computer makers designing systems for large companies now using Unix operating systems. One analyst says the delay is better than a recall. Merced will be used by Microsoft to enhance its Windows NT o/s; Digital Equipment, soon to be acquired by Compaq, will make computers that run either Windows NT or Unix; and Sun Microsystems is adapting for the Merced chip. The chip will process 64 bits of data at a time and will be able to perform multiple tasks at one time.
Comment:
New chip, Merced, won't be ready until mid-2000; first high speed Intel chip since Pentium
