Intel Corp. asks PC makers to delay Pentium systems
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp has quietly asked microcomputer manufacturers to delay by two months, until May 1993, their introduction of computers based on Intel's new Pentium microprocessor. Company officials want to avoid a shortage of the new chip. The delay is the second for the Pentium, which was originally slated to debut in Dec 1992. An Intel spokeswoman says the delay will allow Intel to build up inventories of the Pentium, the company's key weapon in its effort to retain dominance of the microprocessor market. The spokeswoman denies that the delay is part of an effort to squeeze as much profit as possible out of the 80486, Intel's current top-of-the-line microprocessor. Rivals have not yet cloned the 486 in large numbers. Intel staunchly denies that technical problems lie behind the delays.

Intel plans to consolidated industry lead with salvo of price cuts, new products
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp, whose stock has more than doubled in value since spring 1992, plans to retain its dominance of the microprocessor industry with a series of price cuts, product rollouts and investment in factories that could double its chip-making capacity. The company recently announced 4th qtr FY 1992 net income of $428.6 million, or $1.97 per share, on $1.86 billion in revenue. Intel's fortunes are fueled in large part by the phenomenal popularity of its 80486 microprocessor, which is expected to surpass the 386 to become the most popular chip for PCs. Intel could manufacture 30 million 486 chips in 1993, up from 15 million in 1992, and plans to invest $1.6 billion in capital improvements, up from $1.2 billion in 1992.
