Intel earnings increased 17% in third period
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp posts a net income of $201.7 million, or 96 cents a share, and sales of $1.19 billion, for the 3rd qtr ended Sep 28, 1991. The company's net income for the same period last year was $171.9 million, or 83 cents a share, and its sales totalled $1.01 billion. Intel's financial performance surpassed its projections; it had earlier warned investors that its 3rd qtr earnings and sales would be unexpectedly weak, thereby triggering a drop in its stock prices. The last-minute sales of commodity chips and computers in September, as well as a favorable $24 million tax credit ruling, generated the 17 percent income increase. The company, meanwhile, filed suit against Advanced Micro Devices Inc for the violation of Intel microcode copyrights on the 80386 microprocessor.

Advanced Micro posts profit for period, year; computer-chip sales surge paces results, vindicates development of clone
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) reports a large profit for 4th qtr 1991. The company reports that net income for the quarter ended Dec 29 was $106.7 million, or $1.17 a share, which compares with a loss of $43 million, or 55 cents a share, in the same period last year. This good news is seen as a vindication of Chmn and CEO W.J. Sanders' idea for a clone of Intel's 80386 microprocessor. Sales of Advanced Micro's clone microprocessors have far exceeded anyone's expectations. Industry observers call the AMD stock a very good buy. The company's stock, which traded at a low of $3.75 in Nov 1990, was down 12.5 cents on Thursday Jan 9, 1992, closing at $18.875.
