International Mobile plans to complete acquisition of SCS Mobilecom today
Article Abstract:
International Mobile Machines Corp (IMM) will acquire SCS Mobilecom Inc in Oct, 1992, in order to benefit from SCS' research of spread spectrum technology for use in cellular telephone equipment - a new technology that may supplant current digital communications equipment. Cellular telephone manufacturers are expected to replace their analog technology with digital communications networks. Digital transmission is capable of processing a larger volume of calls with better sound using time division multiple access (TDMA). SCS is developing a new technology, code division multiple access (CDMA), that can work in conjunction with TDMA or with analog systems. CDMA transmits a coded message across a radio spectrum band. SCS requested standards for the new technology and hopes to develop a product by 1994.

Pacific Telesis's PacTel sells Microtel stake
Article Abstract:
PacTel Corp sells its 25.3 percent stake in Microtel Communications Ltd to British Aerospace PLC. Microtel Communications is a telecommunications consortium that was formed to create an all-digital pocket telephone network in Great Britain. PacTel indicates that the investment risk necessary for the project is unacceptable; the telecommunications concern also noted that building cell sites is proving to be more difficult than expected because of Britain's aesthetic standards. Proponents of personal communications networks believe that their technology will eventually compete with wired telephone networks, but recent customer surveys indicate that the demand for personal communications networks is not yet great enough to warrant the heavy investment that is required to provide the technology.
