Interpreting Rising Concentration: The Case of Beer
Article Abstract:
Due to rising concentration in the brewing industry, often through horizontal mergers, there is extensive concern over antitrust problems. Two scenarios are proposed for this alteration in industry structure: competitive growth among the efficient firms, and the anticompetitive negation of small but efficient brewers. Competition is probably the biggest factor in the changes in the beer market. Economic analysis points to higher concentration having lower industry costs. If the reduction in costs is great enough, benefits might accrue to both consumers and producers, which suggests that efforts to deconcentrate the industry are advised. This research is based on output data of annual beer sales for thirty-eight states from 1974 to 1980. For about half of the forty United States breweries, sales are never great enough to exceed the 'all others' category. State beer consumption is a function of demand levels and local supply data. Sale share and the national size related index are highlighted in the model developed. Tables of variable means and regression analysis data are included.

Sell Signal
Article Abstract:
A system is offered to help the shareholder of a company decide when to sell a stock. The system simply requires that you set a selling price for a stock the minute you buy it, and a price you will sell at if the price falls. The bottom, or floor level sales price is always set ten per cent below the trading price of the stock, no matter how high it rises. However, the floor price is never lowered. He advises trying his method out on paper first.
