Short-term interest rates may be cut further by the Federal Reserve Board in order to deal with slowing US economic growth due to lower exports and the Pacific Rim's deflationary trends. High-yield, or junk, corporate bonds have weakened in 1998, corporate bond yields are wider in 1998, and US Treasury bonds are no longer undervalued after the strong 1998 bond market rally. The best value in US bonds are represented in municipal issues.

The US investment company fund discounts might narrow in 1997 if capital gains taxes are decreased. This narrowing strategy may cause closed end funds to lose investors. Investors are interested in large and middle capitalization issues in 1997 but there is also some interest in smaller capitalization issues.

Each segment of the investment company (income) market has its own difficulties. A good bond market has existed during the 1990s but bond price gains are probably not going to continue during 1997. A diversified portfolio of a bond fund is a good technique for investors to use during 1997 to increase income.
