Most managers of mutual funds either use mathematical models to quantify the value of the stocks or they use traditional methods of analyzing stocks and predicting the future. Many of the first group, the 'quants,' reach contrarian decisions, because they believe market forces will balance given time. A recent conference challenged investment assumptions including the opinion that equities bring in greater returns over the long run than bonds.
