Israel's Peres issues call for early elections; vote deemed peace process referendum

Peres announced on Feb 11, 1996, that he would move up Israeli elections previously scheduled for Oct 1996, to May 1996. He hopes the elections will give him a mandate to continue peace talks with the Palestinians and Syrians. Likud Party leader Benjamin Netanyahu is his primary opponent.

Rabin calms coalition crisis

Prime Minister Rabin tried to ease a parliamentary crisis by taking control of Israel's interior and education ministries. The crisis occurred after the Shas party stated that it intended to exit the Labor Party-led coalition government of Rabin.
